Hello my fellow plant nerds! Iโ€™ve been MIA for a few weeks, but I just wanted to check in and let you know that my plants and I are still here growing and thriving! Iโ€™ve also been quiet on the blog, but Iโ€™ve been focused on getting prepared for my Etsy shop launch (still on for 11/11!). Also, I just went through a crazy wildfire apocalypse. ๐Ÿ”ฅ :: I was under a mandatory evacuation for 2 days and with no power after that for 3 days. The #kincadefire blew through my region here in Northern California and it was certainly too close for comfort. In my heart, I knew everything would be fine, but it was still scary to flee my home, leaving most of my belongings and all my plants behind. Thankfully, our firefighters and first responders did a fantastic job controlling the blaze. At its peak, there were over 5,000 personnel on the scene. The wildfire burned almost 78,000 acres and my county evacuated more than 180,000 people. It was a rough time for my community, but we are forever #sonomastrong. As of yesterday, the fire is now 100% contained, 2 weeks after its onslaught. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿปโœจ :: My heart goes out to those directly affected. I may have lost a weekโ€™s worth of work, but I still have my home to come back to. Iโ€™m one of the lucky ones. My workplace still stands. And my cats and plants are still alive. I am thankful for my friends who invited us into their home at the last minute. Aloe arborescens, a.k.a. โ€œTorch Aloeโ€ or โ€œCandelabra Aloeโ€, glowing in the afternoon light.๐ŸŒต๐ŸŒŸ :: Iโ€™ve noticed โ€œarborescensโ€ come up in a lot of plant species names. It means tree-like. My String of Hearts is flowering and the shape of the blooms is so unique! They look slightly carnivorous, much like a Pitcher Plantโ€™s modified leaf. Apparently, they are! The downward-pointing hairs at the top of the flower trap flies that are attracted to the scent. Until the hairs wither away, the fly is prevented from leaving.
